About Me

My photo
Adalbert is a forum for me, to post ephemera, photography, poetry, occasional travel notes, and various spontaneous motions. Cover photo: Parsonage where my great-grandfather spent his early years. Taken near Liegnitz, Silesia, ca. 1870. The "xothique" portion of the web address is a nod to Clark Ashton Smith's fictional continent of Zothique.

The Past is never dead

Seemingly, in the late nineteenth century, racialism was seen as somehow enhanced when rendered in 3d. Whilst patronising, this 1897 stereoscopic card by B.L. Lingley (or B.L. Singley?), printed by the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania and St. Louis, Missouri, is actually fairly tame when compared with a lot of material from previous eras.

  1. Interesting photo. I had to google the caption to understand it.

  2. Thanks for the comment Rob, that is indeed an idiom! I've had the card around for a long time, but posting this material has caused me to examine things more closely. There are a number of photos and stereoscopic cards by the same photographer on the web. From what I found by a web search, it seems that B.L. Singley is the same man who founded and owned the Keystone View company.
