About Me

My photo
Adalbert is a forum for me, to post ephemera, photography, poetry, occasional travel notes, and various spontaneous motions. Cover photo: Parsonage where my great-grandfather spent his early years. Taken near Liegnitz, Silesia, ca. 1870. The "xothique" portion of the web address is a nod to Clark Ashton Smith's fictional continent of Zothique.

Some Thoughts on David Letterman

The recent announcement of David Letterman's impending retreat called up memories of his show in the 1980s, when he, or his producers, or both, danced with danger and invited guests who included Allen Ginsberg, Harvey Pekar (the comics writer, whom Letterman didn't exactly flatter), Brother Theodore, and hilarious non sequiturs by the likes of Chris Elliott, Crispin Glover, and Calvin DeForest.  Mostly, this atmosphere evaporated with the passage of years.

  1. TV should be unpredictable and provocative. For me, the best talk show host still is Larry Sanders.

  2. Rob, I don't know if Letterman is known well outside the U.S., but yes, one never knew what would happen in the early years, before the advertisers had more control.
