About Me

My photo
Adalbert is a forum for me, to post ephemera, photography, poetry, occasional travel notes, and various spontaneous motions. Cover photo: Parsonage where my great-grandfather spent his early years. Taken near Liegnitz, Silesia, ca. 1870. The "xothique" portion of the web address is a nod to Clark Ashton Smith's fictional continent of Zothique.

T.J. Masurian

Photo of my great-grandfather Ludwig Falk (cf. entry of September 10, 2010, and others) in old age, together with, from left to right, his wife, Margaret, grandson, his daughter (my great aunt), my maternal grandmother, and part of someone's side (my grandfather?). Ludwig looked pretty dapper there with the beard and suit. Probably taken in Milwaukie, Oregon, ca. 1924.
What model car is it? Whose car? Who was standing behind the camera at that moment?

  1. He does look quite dapper - and the photo/lighting has a strange effect on his eyes.

  2. We should take pictures of ourselves in front of cars nowadays! Seeing this photo made me think about the ones I have in my archive, pictures from the same time--20s, 30s, 40s. At least half of them show ancestors in front of cars. It was the equivalent of the painted backdrop of an urn and willows a half century before.

  3. Christine -- I think the camera caught Great Granddad (and grandma) blinking! Thus the spooky effect.
Roman-- Yes, that would be good to pose in front of a car, and also have an unsmiling expression, as in the 20s, 30s, 40s. That era was the time nostalgic to the films of the 60s, equivalent of the 70s and 80s as far as distance in time from now.
